The Top Three Pitfalls of House Hunting

Buying a home is a big deal.  There is often a lot of stress and intense emotions involved in the process.  However, when selecting a home to buy, it’s important to keep a rational mind.  Here are three of the biggest mistakes commonly made during house hunting:

1) Eyes that are bigger than your checkbook: Imagine it.  You find your dream home.  It has a pool, an extra bedroom, and the most jaw-dropping master bedroom that you’ve ever seen.  So, what’s the problem?  Well, unfortunately, it’s completely out of your budget.  In order to avoid going through this disappointment, don’t even look at properties out of your price range.  Make sure to inform your real estate agent of this condition.

2) Settling: Simply put, don’t settle!  It is best to know what you desire in a home and avoid making a rash decision.  Buying a home is a huge commitment and it should not be taken lightly.  Don’t settle for less than what you desire by overlooking important details!  If a home needs massive repairs or landscaping, don’t ignore that.

3) Making a ridiculous offer: This goes along with the second point.  Don’t allow yourself to get pulled into a bidding war.  The last thing you want to do is to over-bid and pay way too much for what you’re getting.  Don’t settle, but also don’t over-extend yourself financially.  You don’t have to rush the process.  Give yourself time to think over this significant decision.  Sometimes you may have to act fast, but most of the time, it’s better to buy a home without any added pressure.
